The apples are first steamed until soft, and then they’re given a big blast of dry heat to caramelize. The result is wonderfully delicious baked apples that make a perfect pie filling, base for apple crumble, or simple dessert served with vanilla bean ice cream.

Temp: 200°F
Heat: Top, Bottom
2. Slice Apples
Thinly the slice apples, transferring them to a large bowl and tossing with the lemon juice as you go to prevent them from browning.
3. Mix the Sauce
In a separate bowl, mix the sugar, maple syrup, butter, almond milk, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg with a fork until combined.
4. Mix in Flour
Mix in the flour until the sauce thickens.
5. Toss Apples With Sauce
Add the sauce to the bowl with the apples and toss to coat the apples in the sauce.
6. Transfer to Baking Dish
Pour the apples and any sauce remaining in the bowl into a 9- by 11-inch baking dish.
7. Bake

Bake the apples until tender, about 1 hour.

9. Serve
